US Patents 607274, 6260196 – F.A.S. - Floating Armor System
Vanson builds the best hard armor in the business. We start with quarter inch closed cell foam that has been laminated to Velcro compatible tricot on both sides. This is cut to shape using our water jet, with opposing concave curves so that when sewn together the foam assumes the finished shape of the armor piece. The stitching of the foam shapes is done with a specially adjusted zig-zag stitch so as not to either compress the foam in the seam area or to have a thick, bulky, and uncomfortable seam. Custom molded HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) shapes then get smaller and softer closed cell foam inserts glued to the interior apexes of the HDPE shapes to make sure that the curved padding is extra full at the apex of the armor – right at the elbow points, the kneecap areas, and the end of shoulder bone areas. The HDPE shapes are then stitched to the shaped foam pads using a special machine that first punches a hole through all the layers and then follows through with an extra strong nylon thread. Then both the edges of the HDPE shapes and the attachment thread are covered by leather shapes double stitched to protect both the assembly from abrasion and to prevent the hard edges of the HDPE shapes from possibly coming into contact with the rider's skin. Onto this assembly elastic and Velcro are added for attachment to the matching fields inside the garment.
The concept of this system is to both disperse and absorb the force of repeated impacts while providing the best protection. In order to achieve this, it is important that the armor remains in the proper position relative to the body and does not shift even during a crash. At the same time the armor needs some limited movement relief, so the rider is not constrained by the fit of the armor. To allow for this movement we have developed and patented the Floating Armor System (F.A.S.) which uses the Velcro and elastic harness to connect the GP armor to the shell of the garment.
