The Mille Miglia established in 1927 is one of the most famous Italian road race for automobiles. This annual race took place in Italy 24 times from 1927 to 1957 (13 times before World War II, and 11 times from 1947) running 1000 miles from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia taking place on public roads. The name Mille Miglia, is Italian for “one thousand miles”.
The public roads used for the Mille Miglia were closed to everyday traffic, they presented numerous hazards: drivers raced through towns and villages, up and down mountains, and through the Italian countryside at high speeds. The 1938 Mille Miglia was completed the race in just under 12 hours, unfortunately a crash that killed several spectators prompted Benito Mussolini, (Italy’s fascist leader) to ban the following race of 1939. It returned for one more race in 1940 but because of World War II it was not held from 1941 through 1946.
The Mille Miglia resumed in 1947 and for the next ten years drew hundreds of entrants. The final race was won by the Ferrari factory team with 8 time winner Piero Taruffi at the wheel.
